Does Lyrica 150 mg cause weight gain?

Last reviewed · 3 min read · Updated

Bone review card, cobalt edge, lime chip: scale chip, 150 capsule

Yes. A 7 percent or greater gain over baseline showed up in 9 percent of Lyrica-treated adults versus 2 percent on placebo in controlled trials up to 14 weeks. Few people (0.3 percent) left those trials because of weight. Gain tracked dose and duration, not clearly BMI, sex, or age, and it was not limited to people with visible edema. Ankle numbers and the thiazolidinedione stack live on edema watch, not as a reprint here.

The 7 percent cut is a research line

Nine versus two percent is a trial threshold, not your permission to wait until jeans fail. Four pounds on a 250 lb start is not automatically that cut. Still log a morning weight.

A 150 mg/day start is not a free pass. Dose-linked gain means later 300 mg days can add more. Starting dose still gets a scale.

Glitazone caution without reprinting the cut

Pioglitazone or rosiglitazone plus pregabalin raised both weight-gain and edema reports versus either drug alone in the diabetic-neuropathy safety pool. The combined percents sit on edema watch so this scan does not clone that table.

Heart-failure history makes the watch louder. Rapid gain with breathlessness is a same-day call, not a larger waistband.

Appetite and stillness can add kilos without pits

Label language says gain is not limited to edema. Appetite can rise. Dizziness and somnolence can cut the usual walk. That path adds weight without dramatic sock marks.

Do not add a stimulant 'fat burner' on top of a Schedule V capsule. Walk if you can do it safely. Dizziness scan.

What diabetic cohorts actually gained

Among diabetic patients, Lyrica-treated people gained a mean 1.6 kg (range -16 to 16 kg) versus 0.3 kg on placebo (range -10 to 9 kg). In 333 diabetic patients on Lyrica for at least two years, mean gain was 5.2 kg.

Those are means with wide ranges. Some people lose. Some gain a lot. The board will not pretend 150 mg is weight-neutral because a friend stayed flat.

A1C did not look like a lost lane

In controlled and longer open-label diabetic work, pregabalin did not appear to wreck glycemic control as measured by HbA1C. That sentence is not a reason to ignore the scale. It is a reason not to invent a 'Lyrica wrecks A1C' headline.

Long-term cardiovascular effects of the weight gain are unknown. Short trials did not show important blood-pressure change from the kilos. Unknown is still unknown.

Scale tag, then the ankle card

Yes, weight can rise. Nine versus two at the 7 percent cut. Diabetic means 1.6 kg and 5.2 kg at two years. Ankles: edema watch.

Do not cliff-stop for a few pounds. Taper scan. Yuki Tanaka tags kilos after section 5.8.

Kit M., Green Bay Stop 150 mg tonight because jeans tightened?

Board reply

Report the gain. Do not cliff-stop. A clinician may drop the day or taper. Sudden stop risks rebound symptoms and, in seizure patients, more seizures.

Pablo G., Tucson Gained 3 lb in ten days. Is that the 9 percent?

Board reply

Three pounds is not automatically a 7 percent-of-baseline gain. If socks tightened in the same window, treat it as fluid until told otherwise. Call if breathing changed.

Rhea T., Albany Diabetes plus 150 mg. Will my A1C jump?

Board reply

Trial and longer open-label diabetic work did not show loss of glycemic control by HbA1C. Still watch the scale. Mean gain in diabetics was 1.6 kg in the shorter look.
