Is there a generic for Lyrica 150 mg?

Last reviewed · 3 min read · Updated

Bone review card, cobalt edge, lime chip: July 2019 leaf, capsule out of foil

Yes. FDA announced first generics of Lyrica on 19 July 2019. Pfizer's pediatric exclusivity had run to 30 June 2019; the agency then approved multiple applications for pregabalin capsules. This scan will not invent ANDA numbers. Brand Lyrica and AB-rated pregabalin share the 150 mg adult start and the same kidney columns. Dye or lactose can differ. Allergy to a color is not proof the generic is weaker. See the panel for the split day.

What 19 July 2019 opened

FDA said that day it had approved first generics of Lyrica (pregabalin) for the same adult uses the brand already held: diabetic nerve pain, postherpetic neuralgia, adjunct partial-onset seizures in older teens and adults, fibromyalgia, and spinal-cord injury pain.

The press note named several manufacturers. Listing every holder here would still not be your vial. Read the bottle you hold. This board will not publish an ANDA file number it did not pull from your carton.

Kidneys still rewrite the generic day

Unchanged drug in the urine did not become brand-only in 2019. CrCl 30-60 mL/min halves a 150 mg start. Below that, the day shrinks again and may collapse toward once daily.

People who 'just take the 150 capsule' after a generic switch and a creatinine climb are taking a different exposure. Recalculate. Sibling kidney scan holds the columns.

Does generic 150 split the same way

Yes. Adult labelled starts still begin at 150 mg per day in two or three doses when CrCl is at least 60 mL/min. A 150 mg capsule can be one piece of that day. It is not a once-daily default.

If the generic bottle says 150 mg and the directions say twice daily, ask whether that is 150 twice (a 300 mg day) or 75 twice using a different strength. Screenshot confusion is common after the 2019 switch.

Brand carton versus AB-rated capsule

AB-rated pregabalin has to match the labelled amount of drug. Shell dyes and fillers can change. A person who flushed on a red-orange 75 mg shell may tolerate a white 150. That is an excipient story, not a potency story.

Pharmacies may substitute unless the prescriber wrote dispense as written. Schedule V still applies to the generic. Control context: misuse flag.

Why this scan prints no ANDA

ANDA numbers live on applications and some labels. Guessing one from memory is how boards invent paperwork. If you need the application on a specific bottle, read that bottle or ask the pharmacist for the NDC.

July 2019 is the public date this board will stand behind. Later ANDAs exist. They do not change the 150 mg start column.

Where the 2019 date stops

The date opened supply. It did not open an aisle. OTC scan covers that no. Yuki Tanaka, Toronto board.

Board thread

Answers follow the U.S. Lyrica label.

Wes P., Spokane Can I insist on brand after 2019?

Board reply

Dispense-as-written is a prescriber mark. Insurance may still prefer generic pregabalin. The labelled 150 mg day does not change with the carton art.

Hugo T., Providence Pharmacy swapped brand Lyrica 150 for generic. Same directions?

Board reply

Same INN, same split, same renal table, same Schedule V. Confirm the directions still match the daily total you were taught. If the capsule color changed and you itch, call about the shell, not about 'weak generic.'

Imani C., Durham Which company made the first generic 150?

Board reply

FDA named several holders in the July 2019 announcement. Your vial may be a later one. Read the manufacturer on the bottle you were handed. This scan will not invent an ANDA to fill the gap.
