What if you miss a Synthroid 50 mcg tablet?

Last reviewed · 3 min read · Updated

Bone review card, cobalt edge, lime chip: empty morning slot

Take the missed Synthroid 50 mcg when you remember if you can still keep an empty stomach. If the next day's tablet is due, skip the missed one. Do not take two 50 mcg tablets to catch up. The brand FAQ and Mayo counseling both say never more than the prescribed dose.

What do you do the morning you remember the missed 50 mcg?

If a dose is missed in the morning, the brand FAQ says try to take it as soon as possible. If it has been more than a day since the last dose, skip the missed tablet and take the normal dose as scheduled. Never take more than the prescribed dose.

Mayo Clinic counseling matches the last half: if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and go back to the regular schedule. Do not double doses.

I skipped three dawns. Take three tablets now?

No. Resume the usual 50 mcg and tell the clinician how many dawns vanished. A triple swallow is how a quiet heart gets noisy.

If misses are weekly, a pillbox or a bedtime move rates higher than another 12.5 mcg bump. Rising TSH with a full blister still in the cabinet is absorption or binding, not 'the 50 mcg stopped working.'

Can I take the late 50 mcg after I already ate?

If breakfast already happened, you can wait for the next empty window rather than park 50 mcg on toast. Chronic sliding time creates TSH noise that looks like resistance.

Take when remembered on an empty stomach if you can still delay food thirty to sixty minutes. empty-stomach signal is the clock page. This page is the miss.

What if the miss is a time-zone hotel breakfast?

Travel is a consistency problem, not a new microgram. Keep the same gut-empty rule relative to breakfast in the new city. Hotel coffee still counts.

A week of room-service oatmeal with the tablet is a TSH surprise six weeks later. Do not double tonight because the flight was late.

Why not take two 50 mcg tablets on Sunday?

In hypothyroidism, the T4 half-life on the insert's PK table is 9 to 10 days. One missed dawn is not a bank you deposit into with a double swallow.

Two tablets in one morning is how palpitations get a new origin story. If weekends are the miss, move the clock to a life you actually live, then redraw TSH in 6 to 8 weeks.

Does the U.S. Highlights section print a missed-dose bullet?

The U.S. patient-counseling list on DailyMed does not add a separate missed-dose numbered bullet. The brand FAQ and Mayo language above are the counseling this scan uses. If your own leaflet disagrees, follow the leaflet in the box.

Half-life numbers in this scan come from the label PK table (9 to 10 days in hypothyroidism). They are not a license to skip all week.

Answers follow the U.S. Synthroid label.

Freya L. Is a weekly miss a reason to raise 50 mcg?

Board reply

Weekly misses are a clock problem first. Fix the alarm or the bedtime lane, then redraw after 6 to 8 stable weeks. Do not treat a full unused blister as a weak tablet.

Dario K. Forgot at 6, remembered at 9, breakfast still waiting. Take 50 mcg?

Board reply

Yes if you can still keep the empty window before food. Then resume tomorrow's usual clock. Do not take a second 50 mcg at dawn tomorrow.

Bess A. I missed Tuesday and Wednesday. Triple Thursday?

Board reply

No. Resume one 50 mcg and tell the clinician the two misses. The 9 to 10 day hypothyroid half-life is why a punishment dose is not the labelled catch-up.
