Is there a generic for Synthroid 50 mcg?

Last reviewed · 3 min read · Updated

Bone review card, cobalt edge, lime chip: two makers, one 50 mcg tablet

Yes. FDA-approved levothyroxine sodium tablets include a 50 mcg strength as a generic. They share the INN with Synthroid. They do not share a color language. After a maker swap, treat the next TSH as a real event. This scan does not invent an ANDA number or a cash figure.

Is levothyroxine sodium the same medicine as Synthroid 50 mcg?

Levothyroxine sodium is the INN. Synthroid is AbbVie's brand tablet. A generic 50 mcg tablet is still synthetic T4. The swallow clock on the brand insert still applies: one daily dose, empty stomach, half an hour to an hour before breakfast.

Ask the pharmacy which name will print on the next bottle. Write that name on the lab slip. Synthroid 50 mcg panel keeps this site's 50 mcg lock.

Does this scan compare brand and generic prices?

No. This page does not invent a cash figure or an ANDA date. Ask the pharmacy that holds your order to price the 50 mcg NDC on the slip.

A cheap generic swallowed with breakfast is still an underdose. Timing lives on empty-stomach signal, not on a coupon.

Why does the new 50 mcg look nothing like the old disc?

Brand 50 mcg is a white round tablet marked SYNTHROID and 50. Generic discs can use other shapes and inks. Color is not a dose. Do not retitle a tablet because the shade looks close to another strength.

If two bottles of 50 mcg sit in the same drawer, cancel the dead NDC. lab-strip signal wants the live maker named on the requisition.

How long after a new maker do you redraw?

A manufacturer swap still waits 6 to 8 weeks for TSH in primary hypothyroidism even when the script still says 50 mcg.

Peak effect of a given dose may take 4 to 6 weeks. A draw on day ten after a new oval photographs last month's product, not the new one.

Why does a generic swap still need a later TSH?

SYNTHROID has a narrow therapeutic index. Small absorption shifts can move TSH even when the paper microgram stays 50. That is why a legal substitution is still a lab event.

Do not add a second tablet from the old bottle to 'boost' a new oval. Keep one product in the house through the next draw. The brand-switch scan walks the swap itself.

Can I keep switching makers every refill?

You can be substituted at the counter. The board still wants one maker through the next six-to-eight-week strip. Monthly oval roulette is how people collect three TSH printouts and no plan.

The same-maker scan is the habit version of this job. This page only answers whether a generic 50 mcg exists.

Board thread

Answers follow the U.S. Synthroid label.

Inez D. Can I ask them to keep brand Synthroid 50 mcg?

Board reply

The prescriber can write dispense as written. Coverage and stock are the pharmacy's. Either way, one live product through the next strip is the lab rule this scan keeps.

Colette M. The pharmacy said AB-rated. Skip the next TSH?

Board reply

Interchangeable on paper is not the same as a silent month. Narrow index still earns a 6 to 8 week TSH after the maker changes. Keep the empty-stomach clock while you wait.

Hari P. My generic 50 mcg is a different shape. Did they send the wrong drug?

Board reply

Shape is not the identity check. The label on the bottle should say levothyroxine sodium 50 mcg. If the NDC or the name is wrong, call the pharmacy before the next swallow.
