Should a Synthroid 50 mcg tablet be split?

Last reviewed · 3 min read · Updated

Bone review card, cobalt edge, lime chip: whole 50 mcg tablet, no invented score

Only as the label wrote it. For pediatric patients who cannot swallow intact tablets, crush the tablet, suspend the freshly crushed tablet in 5 to 10 mL of water, and give that suspension immediately. Do not store it. Do not put it in soybean-based infant formula. The U.S. How Supplied table does not print a score line for 50 mcg. A labelled 25 mcg tablet exists.

What split or crush facts does the U.S. insert actually write?

Administer SYNTHROID to pediatric patients who cannot swallow intact tablets by crushing the tablet, suspending the freshly crushed tablet in a small amount (5 to 10 mL) of water, and immediately administering the suspension by spoon or dropper. Ensure the patient ingests the full amount. Do not store the suspension.

Do not administer in foods that decrease absorption of SYNTHROID, such as soybean-based infant formula. That is the labelled crush. It is not a kitchen score into 25 mcg.

Can an adult knife a 50 mcg disc to save a copay?

The insert does not bless adult kitchen arithmetic. If 25 mcg is the written plan, the labelled 25 mcg tablet is how you get there.

Razor halves are how people drift 12.5 mcg without a lab. lab-strip signal then looks like a gut problem.

Are we talking about a capsule you must not open?

SYNTHROID on this board is a tablet. Other levothyroxine capsules on the U.S. market have their own 'swallow whole' lines. Do not borrow those lines to invent a Synthroid 50 mcg score.

If your bottle is not SYNTHROID, read that bottle. One INN, this URL stays on the AbbVie tablet.

If the plan is 25 mcg, what does the insert already supply?

A 25 mcg tablet is one of the twelve labelled strengths. Ask the pharmacy for that NDC. Uneven kitchen halves create strip noise that looks like malabsorption.

This site's title lock is 50 mcg as a whole tablet. The lock scan is the editorial 50. This scan is the split question.

Does How Supplied say the 50 mcg tablet is scored?

Table 4 and Table 11 on DailyMed list 50 mcg as white, round, marked SYNTHROID and 50. They do not add a scored/not-scored column. This scan will not invent one.

Canadian product monographs that mention a score are not this U.S. file. Follow the leaflet in the U.S. bottle you hold.

What if a child vomits soon after a crushed 50 mcg-equivalent?

Call the clinic before repeating the crush. Doubling because the morning was messy is how over-replacement starts in small bodies. Keep the leaflet for school trips.

Pediatric replacement is weight-based. A leftover adult 50 mcg is not a toddler default. This adult lock will not walk a neonatal protocol.

Reed H. The disc looks scored under the kitchen light. Half it?

Board reply

A groove you think you see is not a labelled fact on the U.S. DailyMed tables this scan used. Do not invent a 25 mcg from a 50 mcg disc. Ask the pharmacist about that NDC.

Joss E. Can I cut the 50 mcg tablet to make 25?

Board reply

Only if the prescriber and the leaflet in your box say so. The U.S. How Supplied table does not print a score for this scan to quote. Ask the pharmacy for a 25 mcg NDC.

Padma S. Crush 50 mcg into applesauce for a toddler?

Board reply

The labelled vehicle for a crush is 5 to 10 mL of water, given immediately, not stored. Do not use soybean-based infant formula. Applesauce is not that sentence. Ask the pediatric clinician about a licensed liquid if mornings fail.
