Does metformin 850 mg cause diarrhea?

Last reviewed · 3 min read · Updated

Bone review card, cobalt edge, lime chip: first-week gut cloth, no B12 percent

Yes. In a US Glucophage trial of 141 people dosed up to 2550 mg per day, diarrhea was reported in 53 percent versus 12 percent on placebo. Diarrhea led to discontinuation in 6 percent. The Medication Guide says those stomach effects generally ease after you have taken the medicine for a while, and that meals can help. This scan stays on that stool story. Vitamin trial percents are not filed here.

Why this stool URL leaves the long-course vitamin figure elsewhere

A 29-week vitamin laboratory story is a different scene. It lives on the B12 scan. The reason this page will not quote that figure is the split scan.

Board-check: 53 versus 12, 6 percent stopped, meals, first weeks. Then stop. The 850 panel still holds the GI lock.

Why the guide says the gut often settles

Common effects include diarrhea, nausea, and upset stomach. They generally go away after you take the medicine for a while. Tell the clinician if they bother you a lot, last more than a few weeks, return, or start late.

Late severe GI after years of stable 850 is not 'the tablet acting up.' Think infection or a new stacked gut drug. Look sick, treat it as sick.

What the 6 percent discontinuation means

Diarrhea led to stopping Glucophage in 6 percent of patients in that trial. Most people with loose stool did not leave the study for that reason. A loud first week is still a reason to call, not a reason to declare the INN impossible forever.

If you cannot leave the house or you are dizzy from volume loss, that is a visit. Loperamide plus another 850 is not a labelled work-around.

What the 141-person diarrhea row actually said

Table 1 lists diarrhea in 53 percent of Glucophage-treated patients and 12 percent of placebo. Nausea or vomiting sat at 26 percent versus 8 percent. Those rows are why early one-star reviews cluster on the bathroom.

The same table needed events in more than 5 percent of Glucophage patients and more common than placebo. Diarrhea cleared that bar by a wide margin.

How meals sit next to the diarrhea row

Taking Glucophage with meals can help reduce these effects. That is the Medication Guide line. The PK card for a single 850 with food lives on the food scan.

Empty-gut heroics recreate the 53 percent week. Food in the swallow window is the first tag. Climb speed is second.

Jamal I., Louisville Blood in the stool - keep the 850?

Board reply

Stop the home climb and get care. That is not usual metformin diarrhea. Do not add another 850 on top.

Lutz K., Pittsburgh Day four of 850 and I cannot commute. Is that the 53 percent?

Board reply

Early diarrhea is common in the IR trial row. Hold the next climb and call if you cannot keep fluids. Forever quit after four unfed tablets is how people miss a labelled therapy.

Freya O., Spokane Does everyone get diarrhea on Glucophage 850 mg?

Board reply

No. 53 percent in that trial is high, not everyone. Placebo was already 12 percent. Meals and a slow step are the first tags.
