Is there a generic for Glucophage 850 mg?

Last reviewed · 3 min read · Updated

Bone review card, cobalt edge, lime chip: two names, 850 tablet

Yes. Generic metformin hydrochloride 850 mg is the immediate-release tablet that US pharmacies fill when a script allows substitution for Glucophage. The 1995 US approval is metformin, not a later XR-only story. Color changes. The 850 milligram line does not. Inactive coating can change with the factory. This scan names that identity. XR is another NDC on the IR versus XR scan.

How the IR 850 tablet is listed among strengths

Dosage forms list film-coated 500, 850, and 1000 mg tablets for Glucophage. Generic IR labels repeat those three. If the bottle says 750 or an XR 500, you are not holding this scan's tablet.

Count the milligrams on the vial, not the marketing name on a receipt. Glucophage 850 mg and metformin HCl 850 mg should agree on immediate-release before anyone compares prices.

Whether a new color means a new drug

Manufacturer swaps change dye and imprint. People then think the clinic switched the medicine. The INN is still metformin hydrochloride if the strength and release type match.

Counsel the meal again after a swap because the gut still wants food with IR 850. The panel keeps that GI rating. This page only clears the name.

What 'generic Glucophage 850' actually names

Metformin hydrochloride 850 mg immediate-release is the INN match for Glucophage 850 mg tablets. Pharmacies dispense that strength when the writer permits a generic. Asking for 'the brand only' is a coverage choice, not a different mechanism.

Tablets in the US IR line are 500, 850, and 1000 mg. This board reviews 850. A 500 mg generic is still metformin. It is not this lock.

How this identity scan stays off the XR bottle

Extended-release metformin uses other starts, a 2000 mg usual daily ceiling, and a swallow-whole rule. Calling every white tablet 'generic Glucophage' mixes two NDCs.

If the vial says XR or ER, leave this page and open 850 IR versus XR. Board-check the release type before you argue about brand loyalty.

What the 1995 approval attaches to

Initial US approval in 1995 is written on the Glucophage prescribing information for metformin hydrochloride tablets. That date tags the IR product family. It does not promise a specific factory imprint on today's bottle.

Later extended-release products kept the INN and changed the swallow. Do not read 1995 as proof that an XR tablet is the same 850 IR you were sold.

What stays labelled after the factory name changes

Start options stay 500 mg twice daily or 850 mg once daily with meals. Increments stay 500 mg weekly or 850 mg every two weeks. The IR ceiling stays 2550 mg per day in divided doses.

Kidney cuts do not relax because the tablet is cheaper. eGFR under 30 still stops the bottle. That job is on the eGFR scan.

Board thread

Answers follow the U.S. Glucophage label.

Hugh B., Omaha Can I insist on the Glucophage brand for 850 mg?

Board reply

You can ask. Coverage may prefer the generic. The labelled start and meal rule do not depend on the brand word.

Pavel S., Portland Is generic metformin 850 mg the same as Glucophage 850 mg?

Board reply

Same INN and same immediate-release 850 mg line when that is what was filled. Imprint and color can differ. XR is not that match.

Nia F., Atlanta The new bottle looks different. Did they change my dose?

Board reply

Read the strength. If it still says metformin hydrochloride 850 mg immediate-release, the milligram line did not change. Ask the pharmacist if the release type changed.
