How long does metformin 850 mg last?

Last reviewed · 3 min read · Updated

Bone review card, cobalt edge, lime chip: divided daily cover

Hours, then the next meal-tied dose. Plasma elimination half-life after oral metformin is about 6.2 hours. Blood half-life is about 17.6 hours because red cells hold some drug. Glucophage 850 mg is still written as a daily, often divided, plan - not as a tablet you take when glucose 'feels high.' This scan is that cover. Onset weeks sit elsewhere.

What the 17.6-hour blood half-life adds

Erythrocytes take up metformin over time. Blood elimination half-life is about 17.6 hours. That is a distribution note, not a once-weekly schedule.

Renal impairment lengthens both clocks and lowers clearance. That is why eGFR cuts exist on the kidney scan, not why someone should stretch 850 to every other day at home.

What the 6.2-hour plasma half-life is for

After oral absorption, about 90 percent of absorbed metformin leaves through the kidney in the first 24 hours. Plasma half-life is approximately 6.2 hours in the prescribing information.

That number explains why IR days are divided as the total climbs. It is not a permission to skip supper's tablet because breakfast 'should still be working' like a long PDE5 clock.

How divided cover differs from 'one 850 forever'

Some adults stay on 850 mg once daily if that is the tolerated, effective total. Many need a second 850 after two weeks. Forever-once is a clinic outcome, not the default duration story.

The 850 panel still locks this strength. Board-check: hours for PK, meals for the split, weeks for glucose judgment.

What 'how long it lasts' does not mean for A1C

Three-month averages do not follow the 6.2-hour plasma line. People mix those clocks and wait one afternoon for an A1C miracle. Onset delay is the weeks scan.

Keep duration here: half-life hours, divided days, kidney excretion. Stop before a second INN or a food-PK lecture.

Why the next meal often gets the next 850

Once the daily total is two or three swallows, each tablet sits with a meal. The duration question then becomes 'did I take today's split,' not 'is yesterday's 850 still on the clock.'

How often 850 is taken - once versus twice - is a separate scan. This page only names the hour-scale cover.

Why 850 mg is not a when-needed glucose tablet

Standing daily totals are how Glucophage is dosed. People who swallow 850 only when a meter looks ugly are inventing a PRN. The label does not write that use.

Cover means the day's milligrams are split with meals so the gut and the kidney see a planned amount. It does not mean one 850 'lasts until Friday.'

Board thread

Answers follow the U.S. Glucophage label.

Sable M., Tampa Does kidney disease make 850 'last longer' so I should take less often on my own?

Board reply

Clearance falls when eGFR falls. Dose changes are clinic work. Do not invent an every-other-day 850 from the half-life sentence.

Leona J., Buffalo Does one Glucophage 850 mg last all day like a 24-hour pill?

Board reply

Plasma half-life is about 6.2 hours. Days are often divided as the total rises. One 850 can be a labelled start. It is not a 24-hour PRN promise.

Craig H., Des Moines If I feel fine at hour eight, can I skip the evening 850?

Board reply

Skip only if the written plan is once daily or a clinician held the dose. Feeling fine is not the labelled duration test.
