Is UK pharmacy Viagra the same as US over-the-counter?

Last reviewed · 3 min read · Updated

Bone review card, cobalt edge, lime chip: UK bag versus empty US OTC stamp

No. UK pharmacy Viagra Connect is not the same as US over-the-counter. MHRA reclassified Connect 50 mg from prescription-only to a pharmacy (P) medicine. A UK pharmacist screens the man, then may supply 50 mg. FDA has not opened a US aisle or a US pharmacist-only class for 25-100 mg.

Where does a US reader go after this split?

To the order scan for how a US line is written, and to the sildenafil panel for the 25-100 mg card. Do not treat a UK pharmacist chat as a US fill.

Yuki Tanaka tags Connect stories so the Toronto board does not import a P-class myth onto a US script.

What legal class is Viagra Connect in the UK?

Pharmacy medicine (P). MHRA announced the POM-to-P move after Commission on Human Medicines advice and a public consultation. Supply is from a pharmacy, by or under a pharmacist's supervision, not from an open grocery shelf.

The screened pack is 50 mg sildenafil citrate. That is one rung, not the whole 25-100 mg US ladder.

Did FDA copy the UK P move?

FDA never copied that UK move. US Viagra and generic sildenafil 25-100 mg tablets stay prescription only. The OTC scan is the US no. This scan only keeps the UK lane from being treated as a US aisle.

Importing a Connect carton is not a US over-the-counter path. Customs and personal-import rules are a different problem. They do not rewrite FDA class.

Is the INN inside Connect still sildenafil?

Yes. 50 mg sildenafil citrate. Food delay, nitrates, and stimulation still travel with that INN. A UK P sticker does not cancel Tmax plus 60 minutes or the nitrate wall.

US generics after December 2017 also hold 50 mg. That is a prescription generic, not a Connect pack. See the generic scan.

Does Connect cover 25 mg and 100 mg?

The reclassification file set Connect at 50 mg, maximum 50 mg, maximum daily 50 mg, maximum pack 8 tablets. 25 mg and 100 mg remain prescription medicines in the UK on that split.

A man who needs 25 mg for age or CYP, or 100 mg after a labeled climb, is not on the Connect pack. He is back on a written line.

What does the UK pharmacist screen actually do?

The pharmacist decides whether 50 mg is appropriate, talks through erectile dysfunction and side effects, and can send the man to a GP when the checklist fails. Severe cardiovascular disease, high cardiovascular risk, liver failure, severe kidney failure, and certain interacting medicines stay under a doctor.

That screen is a UK P-class tool. A US pharmacist cannot copy it into an OTC sale.

Leila B., Tacoma If Connect is only 50 mg, can I still get 100 mg in the UK without a GP?

Board reply

The Connect reclassification was 50 mg, maximum 50 mg. 100 mg stays on the UK prescription side in that split. This board's US lock remains 25-100 mg behind a written line.

Anika V., Portland ME My cousin bought Connect in London after a pharmacist chat. Same as CVS?

Board reply

No. That was a UK 50 mg P-class sale. CVS in the United States still needs a prescription for 25, 50, or 100 mg. The pharmacist chat does not travel.

Rhys C., Savannah Can I ask a US pharmacist to run the UK Connect checklist and sell 50 mg?

Board reply

No. FDA has not created a US P class for sildenafil. A US pharmacist can fill a written line. They cannot convert 50 mg into a Connect-style sale.
