Can salt substitutes sit with enalapril 20 mg?

Last reviewed · 3 min read · Updated

Bone review card, cobalt edge, lime chip: salt-substitute box far from 20 mg

No, not without asking first. Patients on VASOTEC are told not to use potassium-containing salt substitutes without consulting their physician. Those substitutes, potassium supplements, and potassium-sparing diuretics can push serum potassium up. In hypertension trials about one percent crossed 5.7 mEq/L. Heart failure saw 3.8 percent. Hypernil is only the export name on the same INN.

A high-K plan does not override the pregnancy box

If the test is positive, enalapril stops. A salt-sub conversation is over. The pregnancy scan is that boxed warning.

The panel can sit next to this kitchen card. Chart the INN so a later dietitian sees the ACE.

A thiazide on the list changes the mean, not the rule

Enalapril alone raised mean potassium about 0.2 mEq/L over up to 48 weeks. With a thiazide, the mean change was essentially none. Averages do not bless a salt substitute on 20 mg.

Loops waste potassium. ACE inhibitors can hold it. The net is still a number. Do not freelance ions from the aisle because a loop 'cancels' the ACE.

A regular meal is not this warning

Food does not block enalapril absorption. That job is the food scan. This page is only the potassium shaker.

Bananas and potatoes belong in a diet talk. They are not the labelled salt-substitute sentence. Do not ban a fruit from this card and then use lite salt freely.

What the patient block already forbids

Do not use salt substitutes that contain potassium unless the prescriber said yes. That is a labelled counseling line, not a food-blog caution. 'Lite salt' and some heart-healthy shakers are potassium chloride.

Bring the bottle to the visit. A green lid is not a lab. The potassium scan has the 5.7 cut. The renal-lane signal is the combined watch.

Which stacks the label names

Spironolactone, triamterene, amiloride, potassium tablets, and potassium salt substitutes. If hypokalemia is proven and those agents are still needed, the label wants caution and frequent potassium checks.

In heart failure, potassium-sparing agents should generally not be used with VASOTEC. That sentence is stronger than a kitchen maybe. Someone has to own the draws if both stay.

Who is already closer to a high K

Renal insufficiency and diabetes are named risk factors. They do not need a salt substitute to get into trouble. Adding one is how a Friday BMP surprises everyone.

GFR 30 mL/min or below also changes the enalapril start to 2.5 mg on the hypertension table. The creatinine scan has that row. Twenty milligrams is not a kitchen experiment.

Answers follow the U.S. Vasotec (enalapril) label.

Dove Rios Can I use a salt substitute only on weekends?

Board reply

Weekend-only is still potassium on an ACE. This scan will not write a Saturday exception. If hypokalemia is proven, the labelled path is caution and frequent checks, not a shaker schedule.

Pia Nilsen The shaker says 'low sodium.' Fine on 20 mg?

Board reply

Read whether it uses potassium chloride. If it does, the Vasotec patient block wants a clinician yes first. Bring the bottle. Do not guess from 'heart healthy.'

Carl Mehta I am on furosemide too. Don't I need extra potassium?

Board reply

Sometimes a loop wastes K and an ACE holds it. That net is a lab, not a lite-salt hobby. Ask before you add a substitute or a supplement.
